What is Upgrading?
Upgrading your broadband service is when you increase your connection bandwidth
either with your current ISP or a new ISP, whether it be the download speed
and/or usage allowance,
Upgrading with your Current ADSL Broadband Provider
Firstly, contact your ADSL provider and request a change in your package,
some providers may charge for this service, the your package will be upgraded
with minimum down time. But again forward planning always helps, and these
are the type of questions you should ask before taking up any service in
case of any eventuality.
On most occasions you will not be breaking your existing contract by upgrading.
However, some ISPs may commence your minimum term contract again when you
upgrade, so it always best to check the terms of your contract first, always
be prepared from outset.
Upgrading your Connection BUT Changing to a Different
ADSL Provider
It is now possible to upgrade directly to a new provider. In most cases you
will need to migrate and the process is outlined in a previous section "What
is a Migrations Authority Code (MAC Code)" and the attributed code of
practice. Some providers may charge you an upgrade fee, but this is not generally
the case and not really in their interest to impose.
Upgrading your Cable Broadband Connection
Firstly, check the terms and conditions of your existing contract to make
sure that you are able to upgrade. There maybe minimum periods of notice
required between successive upgrades.
You might not be able to upgrade between providers, as there maybe only one
cable provider in your area.
Restrictions
It is usually not possible to migrate over to a higher speed connection from
your existing ISP to a new ISP. You can however migrate over to your new
provider and then upgrade. A successful upgrade will depend on whether your
line is compatible with the new connection requirements.
